Four Minutes @ LI Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Four Minutes Formidable, 80-year-old Frau Traude Kruger (Monica Bleibtreu) has worked in Mannheim Women's Prison in Germany ever since she started out as a nurse while the Nazis were still in power. She teaches piano to anyone willing to learn, but few of the inmates in this tough establishment are interested in tinkling the ivories until the arrival of Jenny (Hannah Herzsprung), a tough twenty-one-year old who was once a child piano prodigy. Traude is initially reluctant to take on the volatile pupil, but soon discovers that buried beneath her impenetrable facade, Jenny has an invaluable musical talent. Traude makes it her mission to retransform Jenny into the musical wunderkind she once was. Though generations apart, together these two women seek a way out of their lockdown lives through an uneasy alliance built around music. Chris Kraus's second film boasts extraordinary performances by its two leads. Winner of the Audience Award for Best Feature at Frameline's San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival.
