Panel Discussion after screening: Gay in the Military
Featuring Denny Meyer who appears in the film and is the national public affairs spokesman for American Veterans for Equal Rights (the LGBT veterans association). In a world of "don't ask, don't tell" this film is a fascinating look into the struggle of those who want to serve their country, but can only do so while not being honest about who they fully are. "Tales of patriotism colliding with bigotry. Through a series of interwoven interviews with everyone from a fresh-faced 19-year-old wishing he could enlist (but can't, because he refuses to lie about his homosexuality) to an aging World War II vet with a remarkable tale of survival in a German POW camp (he remembers licking moisture off a nail head while being transferred via boxcar), Tell is eloquent testimony to the little-examined history of the military and the LGBT community's overlap. And while far from a political jeremiad, Tell is also proof positive of the blatant ridiculousness of the military's "Don't ask, don't tell" policy."
