SUMMARY OF PROGRAM:
As more designers embrace day-lighting as a strategy to not only improve the indoor environmental quality of a space but also reduce energy consumption, there are new
opportunities emerging that are certain to influence future design decisions. At the same time the cost of some previously prohibitive technologies are dropping, the impacts of glare on occupant safety and well-controlled day-lighting on health are becoming higher
priorities. And, as net-zero energy is becoming recognized as far more than a goal of a few architects, the energy saving potential of particular technologies in relationship to available building surface area is increasing impacting design decisions. Unfortunately, even as technologies and design tools continue to improve, many designs being implemented today as day-lighting solutions are falling short of being solid, whole-building approaches
or strategies where form follows function. Mike Nicklas will focus on advances in day-lighting design and the key factors driving these changes.
