Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents Zebec playing "The Call of Cthulhu" - Silent Film showing with Live Music
Get in the Halloween Spirit with this THRILLER!  and we have POPCORN!

About the project:
Zēbec gives a live performance of a new original score to the 2005 silent film The Call
of Cthulhu. This is composer Ishmael Ali's second multimedia collaboration, the first
being a new score to the 1923 silent film Nosferatu. A sample of the Nosferatu score can be seen here: https://vimeo.com/133300664

About the film:
The Call of Cthulhu is a 2005 silent film adaptation of the 1928 H.P. Lovecraft short story. H.P. Lovecraft was an early 20th century author who is regarded as one of the most influential authors in the science fiction, fantasy, and horror genres. It was produced and distributed by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society and was made in the style of 1920s era films. It has a running time of 47 minutes.

Plot Summary:
While organizing the affairs of his late Uncle, a man accidentally stumbles across a series of clues toward an ancient horror lurking beneath the sea, waiting for the time when the "Stars are Right" and it shall be free to wreck havoc upon mankind. In his investigation he learns of an artist influenced by strange dreams, a police officer discovering an ancient cult worshiping "Great Cthulhu" and ultimately a tale of sailors encountering sanity shattering horror as they discover Cthulhu himself.

About the band:
Zēbec was formed in early 2014 with the goal of writing and performing original music. The project is dedicated to exploring sound through jazz, collaborative improvisation, free jazz, as well as compositional and aesthetic concepts of the avant garde. Zēbec's music reflects their many influences, including 20th century classical music, jazz, and popular music. The group is led by guitarist and composer Ishmael Ali Zghoul and consists mainly of musicians living in the Chicago area. Call of Cthulhu is scored for:

Billy Wolfe  alto sax, clarinet, bass clarinet
Ishmael Ali  guitar
Michael Humpherys  bass
Matt Carroll  drum set, percussion

Press and Quotes:
"Exploratory and forward-thinking compositions executed genuinely and soulfully" Tom Matta

"Zebec's performance combined elements of traditional jazz along with avant garde music, which they interweaved seamlessly. The beauty of their music was complimented by each member's mastery of their instrument and composition. The music felt as if it was composed to give homage to the buzz of the city." Kalina Fleming-Lopez, Our Urban Times

About the composer:
Ishmael Ali Zghoul is a guitarist and composer currently residing in Chicago, Illinois. He is originally from Columbus, Ohio where he studied music at Capital University, graduating with a B.A. in Music and a minor in Art History. There, he studied under the tutelage of master guitarist Stan Smith, pianist Mark Flugge and composers Dina Letsner, Vera Stanojevic, and Tony Zilincik. Ishmael has performed at many venues and stages throughout the midwest including Ann Arbor, Champagne, Chicago, Cincinatti, Cleveland, Columbus, Detroit, LaFayette, Lexington, and South Bend. He was commissioned to write a new score for the silent films Nosferatu (1923) and Call Of
Cthulhu (2005) which he performed at Grandview Theater (2012) and Gateway Theater (2015) respectively. Ishmael relocated to Chicago in fall of 2013 to pursue his master's degree (MM Jazz Studies) at DePaul Univeristy, which he completed in 2015. There he studied with guitarist Bob Palmieri, trumpeter and educator Bob Lark, pianist Ron Perillo, and composers Tom Matta and Christopher Jones. His current projects include Zebec, a group that primarily plays his compositions and The Ali Humpherys Duo which performs weekly at Café Bella.
