The Sàmi of Northern Scandinavia: An Illustrated Presentation with National Geographic Photographer Erika Larsen

In celebration of her book, Sàmi, Walking With Reindeer, National Geographic photographer Erika Larsen will present her work on the Sàmi, the indigenous people of arctic Scandinavia. Over the course of four years, Larsen documented the daily work and home life of Sámi reindeer herders, and learned to speak the north Sámi language. This talk will focus on the unique human-animal interactions she observed and the symbiotic relationship between the Sámi people and their environment. Larsen will also share her insights into the cultural and spiritual life of the Sámi.
For more than a decade, Erika Larsen has used photography to learn intimately about and document cultures that maintain strong connections with nature. She has followed Sámi reindeer herders in the Scandinavian arctic and explored the significance of the horse in Native American culture for National Geographic magazine. Her work has been shown in the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery, the Swedish Museum of Ethnography, the Ájtte Sámi Museum and as part of National Geographic's Women of Vision photography exhibit. Erika received a Fulbright Fellowship to study the North Sámi language and recently published her first book of photographs, Sámi, Walking With Reindeer.
