Truth: Listening to Liberation
Truth: Listening to Liberation
concert:nova partners with the Vocal Arts Ensemble for a riveting performance at the National Underground Railroad Freedom in commemoration of the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War.
Calling on a variety of instrumental and vocal combinations and musical styles, each work makes a lasting, thought-provoking impression. Highlights include a world premiere by Lansing McLoskey and a cantata by David Lang.
Featuring: Alvin Singleton: Truth An elegant, minimalist work based on a fascinating, episodic text describing how Sojourner Truth got her name
David Lang: Statement to the Court An important work written in 2010: on a very moving speech of Eugene Debs
Philip Lasser: The Dream Keeper A secular American cantata on poems of Langston Hughes
Lansing McLoskey: Commissioned World Premiere This eclectic, wonderful composer based in Miami will compose a new work based on the words of Nigerian activist, playwright, and Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka: for clarinet and choir, featuring Ixi Chen. Winner of the American Academy of Arts and Letters 2011 Goddard Lieberson Award, Gramophone hailed Mc Loskey as "a greatly gifted, engaging composer."
The newly formed Commissioner's Circle, the commissioning arm of concert:nova, is dedicated to supporting the creation of 1-2 new works each season. To become involved, please contact Al Lopez, Chair of the Board of concert:nova
