The Sleeping Beauty
The story of a prince, a princess and an evil spell come to life in Tchaikovsky's classic ballet The Sleeping Beauty! The beautiful Princess Aurora is cursed at birth by the evil fairy Carabosse and fated to prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die on her sixteenth birthday. The curse is lessened by the Lilac Fairy, godmother to Aurora, whose spell would prevent death and instead put the princess to sleep for a period of 100 years. Upon her sixteenth birthday, Aurora is presented with four royal suitors. Amid the festivities and excitement, and despite the best efforts of her father the king, Aurora's fate is realized as she pricks herself on a spinning wheel she received as a gift from the disguised Carabosse. She falls into a deep sleep, and the Lilac Fairy casts a slumber spell over the distraught kingdom to be broken only upon Aurora's waking. One hundred years pass. Prince Florimund encounters the Lilac Fairy who presents him with a vision of Aurora, with whom the prince is immediately entranced. He begs to meet her and fights through the thick foliage which has surrounded the castle. Will Prince Florimund triumph in his fight with the queen? Will the kingdom live happily every after? Come find out at TexARTS' production of The Sleeping Beauty.
