Kalapriya presents SWARANJALI at Lemont Temple: AN EVENING OF CARNATIC MUSIC & HARIKATHA by Shiv Subramaniam and Aditi Sriram
"May the dark neck of Siva, which the god of Love has, so to speak, surrounded with nooses in the form of the alluring looks of Parvati reclining his bosom, assign to you prosperity."
This is what is written at the beginning of the Kathasaritasagara, or the Ocean of the Streams of Stories. We can enter such an ocean only with the permission of that dark-necked deity, Lord Shiva, because if he anger him, then we are finished!
Lord Shiva's temper is as flaming as his cosmic dance as Lord Nataraja. His love for Goddess Parvati is as rock solid as the Lingam that people worship. His hair is as knotted as the snakes tangled around his neck, and his sense of humor is as toxic as the poison he has stored inside his neck. Everything about Lord Shiva is dangerous, notorious, and infamous; he is Hinduism's greatest gangster...and yet. His rage teaches us about the ferocity of love. His stampedes reveal the power of dance. And his closed eyes give rise to a third eye that sees the world's deepest secrets.
What secrets and stories about Lord Shiva should we share? We can't start at the beginning because Lord Shiva has no beginning -- even Lord Brahma looked for it, and he failed! We can't start in the middle because we might disturb Lord Shiva during meditation and then he will turn us to ashes! And we can't start with Lord Shiva's children because they are busy racing each other to win a mango. With Lord Shiva, The Destroyer, we have to be careful!
So where to go first? What to say? How to praise? Whom to blame? You will find out on October 18 at Lemont Temple, when we narrate the wild and wonderful adventures of this most potent God of Destruction!
Soak in an environment of talams, ragams, and folklore specially curated by Kalapriya! Shiv Subramaniam, a young leading vocalist, will perform a traditional yet innovative Carnatic music concert. Shiv is a graduate of comparative literature from the University of Chicago. His research paper presented the literature of the Bhagavad Gita. He is currently a Sanskrit scholar at Columbia University in New York. He has studied Carnatic music under several scholars and is a regular performer at the Chennai Music Festival.
"Harikatha" or "Katha Kalakshepa" is an Indian storytelling art in which the raconteur enlivens an otherwise simple tale with song, philosophy, scripture, and humor, creating a world of story around the audience. Aditi Sriram, the story-teller, has written, produced and performed the Harikatha in New York City, amongst several other places with vocalist support from Shiv Subramaniam. Since Shiv and Aditi are both second generation Indians, their story telling style is intrinsic, contemporary and attractive to young adults, to the youth and to music lovers of all ages!
