Free Speaker Series: Professor Caroline McManus, California State University, Los Angeles
A published author and Professor of English at California State University, Los Angeles, Dr. McManus teaches courses in 16th- and 17th-century English literature, pedagogy, and children's literature. She received her Ph.D. from UCLA and her M.A. from the University of Exeter in England, and her participation in the NEH Institute Shakespeare Examined through Performance at the Folger Shakespeare Library significantly influenced her years of classroom practice. Her publications include a book (Spenser's Faerie Queene and the Reading of Women, 2002) and several articles on early modern literature, art, and culture and on pedagogy. She is currently working on three book projects: one on the reading and rereading of children's books, one on Milton's Paradise Lost, and one on the teaching of Shakespeare's plays. Her most recent essay, Shakespeare's Histories: Mirrors for Princes, Primers for Pedagogues, is forthcoming in the Modern Language Association's Approaches to Teaching Shakespeare's English History Plays.
