Dirty Poole @ LI Gay & Lesbian Film Festival
Featuring post-interview reception in the Sky Cafe sponsored by The Law Office of Stephen J. Flynn, V2 Vodka and Stirrings. The V2 Vodka and Stirrings Festival Bar will be open.
In Person: Wakefield Poole and Filmmaker Jim Tushinski Wakefield Poole's groundbreaking erotic films are considered to be the most creative ever made and their influence are seen in a wide range of artists and works, from Chanel advertisements to modern day filmmakers such as Bruce LaBruce. When Poole's first film, Boys in the Sand, opened in New York in 1971, it created a sensation, kicking off the "porno chic" trend a year before Deep Throat and giving gay porn commercial and critical legitimacy for the first time. But most people don't know that Poole had a successful career as dancer, choreographer, and director on television, Broadway, and the West End before becoming the first out gay porn director. Filmmaker Jim Tushinski (That Man: Peter Berlin) will interview Poole onstage about his theater, television, and film career while offering an eye-popping and entertaining collection of clips ranging from Poole dancing with Gwen Verdon, his end credit choreography for Once Upon a Mattress, early experiments with short films, and steamy, visually impressive excerpts from Poole's breakthrough films Boys in the Sand (starring legend Casey Donovan, 1971) and Bijou (1972) as well as from a trio of amazing, rarely screened films: Wakefield Poole's Bible (1973), a lavish, softcore re-imagining of three Bible stories from the women's points of view (which also features some very hot men), Moving (again with Casey Donovan, 1974) and the unique porn/documentary hybrid Take One (1977).
