Ensemble 212 2015-16 Season Opener: The Sounds of the Cosmos
New York's raging chamber orchestra, Ensemble 212, opens its 2015-16 season with its most ambitious program yet! Representing the entire cosmos through music, the concert will open with new Composer in Residence Nina C. Young's work Sun Propeller performed by violinist Fedor Ouspensky. The work is influenced by the Tuvian culture of Southern Siberia and their respect to the spirits of nature. An ocean engineer turned composer with a background in electronic music, Ms. Young is one of the most sought after female composers today.
Juxtaposing the solo violin piece with electronics is the world premiere of conductor Yoon Jae Lee's new chamber reduction of Mahler's gargantuan Symphony No. 3. Mahler sought to capture the essence of the universe in this grand work and Yoon Jae Lee is currently engaged in the Mahler Chamber Project, an ongoing project to create orchestral reductions of Mahler's works for chamber orchestra. Originally conceived for large symphony orchestra of over 100 musicians, this new chamber version features the entire work performed by only 39 musicians! Joining forces with Ensemble 212 are the Young New Yorker's Chorus Women's Ensemble and the vibrant young Mezzo-soprano Hyona Kim, described by the New York Times as "a dark toned, agile Mezzo soprano."
Forgoing traditional printed program notes, Ensemble 212 also features unique live program notes projocted on a screen during the performance, serving as a visual listening guide for the audience. This spectacular evening-length extravaganza will be one of the can't miss season openers by a New York chamber orchestra this season!
Discounted advance tickets will be available until 3 PM on the day of the performance.
