Achilles Wheel CD Release Party
Achilles Wheel is proud to celebrate the release of their new CD, Thirteen Hours. The 13 songs on the album were recorded live at the historic Nevada Theater in downtown Nevada City, in exactly thirteen hours. The new record is receiving glowing reviews by fans of the band, and is a satisfying blend of rock, blues, folk, country, and world music. The evening's event at The Haven will begin with an acoustic set, followed by two full-blown electric sets. Achilles Wheel will perform most of the songs from the new CD, as well as some old favorites and some new, unreleased material. Do not miss this opportunity to see one of Northern California's best and brightest new groups.
Many people in the area will recognize most of the members of Achilles Wheel, starting with Paul Kamm on rhythm guitar and vocals. Paul sings and writes much of the material, and is a member of the popular local bands, The Deadbeats, and Buck Love and the Humperheads. Paul is joined at the front of the stage by Placerville standout Jonny "Mojo" Flores on rhythm and lead guitar, and vocals. Jonny's songs, woven between Paul's compositions, offset by the occasional good old cover tune, make for a thoroughly enjoyable, fulfilling show.
Instrumentally, Achilles Wheel is as good as it gets. Combining the improvisational aspects of Grateful Dead/Allman Brothers band style jams, with top notch singing and four part harmonies, Achilles Wheel is bound to become your favorite new band. The rhythm section of Achilles Wheel, consisting of Mark McCartney, Gary Campus and Shelby Snow, keep the whole wheel rolling. Mark, known for his work with Objects in the Mirror, the Perry Mills Project, and the Deadbeats, is a world class drummer in any circle. Gary Campus, of Deadbeats fame, brings his unique rhythmic styles into play, providing the perfect conduit between rhythm and melody. Shelby Snow on bass guitar, the newest member of the band, adds energy and interest, while holding down the bottom end. Shelby may be remembered for his work with D'arcana and the popular local blues band Grease, Grit and Grime, as well as the group Organasm Orchestra.
When Achilles Wheel takes the stage, one gets the feeling something special is about to take place. And then something special does take place. And it feels right, as though the music you are hearing is the only music that exists at that moment. The songs are the perfect matrix upon which the musicians in the band can build. Leading to what? No one knows. Not even the band members themselves. Achilles Wheel takes musical risks on stage that lead sometimes to a near train wreck, but more often than not, those risks lead to ecstatic, high energy instrumental sections that approach perfection. Jonny Mojo's leads are supremely complimented by the rhythm section, intertwining as though performed by a single entity. The audiences that come to see, hear, and dance to Achilles Wheel have been described as "fully engaged", and are participants in the performance, not just along for the ride. The only way to know what Achilles Wheel is all about is to come down to the show and become spoke folk yourself.
