Civic Ensemble's On the Corner
On the Corner follows an African-American family as they navigate life "on the corner." As the play opens we meet a father and daughter at the funeral of their matriarch. But there is a family member missing at the graveside, the son. The play takes us on the quest of this family to reunite in spite of the internal and external forces that divide them. The play explores the economic, social, and cultural structures that keep some people in a constant cycle of need and despair and provides others with extreme wealth and opportunity. The young man in the play asks, "How did we get here?" as he is being detained for simply walking on the wrong corner. This question guides the journey to solidarity across race and class as the characters in the play seek to change their circumstances.
