Part 1: Form, Function, Resonance A poem is what happens when you try to eff the ineffable
This workshop will focus on the ways in which poetry is a marriage of form and function-- and in that sense, and interaction between the conscious and unconscious mind. We'll discuss the pre-written origins of the medium as a kind of linguistic technology for remembering and transference of ideas and experiences. We'll practice a series of writing techniques that will allows us to tap into our less conscious selves, searching for some core of emotional resonance. Then we will attempt shape this core into a finished work- carving out a vessel to carry the messy and amorphous material of the more obscured parts of human experience.
We will also discuss the more pragmatic side of poetry, the ways in which it can be applied in day-to-day life, and the potential power that it holds.
Part 2: Revision and Criticism. It is one thing to write poetry, it is quite another to revise. In this workshop we will be focusing on the techniques of critique and revision-- how to go about it in the most constructive way, and to make a piece of poetry as good as it can possibly be. While editing and revision may be seen as a more solid, more objective process than the original creation of work, in many ways it is also a creative act. It takes practice to be able to 'feel out' the most fitting and appealing combinations of sound and silence, to make a piece of writing connect with a reader. We will also be discussing the ethics and responsibilities inherent in the writing workshop environment, and how to work with other writers to achieve the best possible results.
