SESSION 1
Title: Oral swellings, reactive vs. neoplastic and what to do with them
Presenter: Dr. Dolphine Oda

Course Outline:  This mini course will cover the clinical presentation and etiology (when applicable) of common oral swellings including those of the gingiva, buccal mucosa, lips and palate.  This lecture will focus on etiology and the role of a dental hygienist in helping the patient avoid the development or recurrence of some of the reactive lesions especially those of the gingiva.  The clinical presentation and applied differential diagnosis will be discussed with each condition in a concise and clear manner, giving the dental hygienists information that they can use on a daily basis.
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the attendee will
1. Learn about the most common gingival swellings
2. Learn how to avoid the recurrence of the reactive gingival swellings
3. Learn about salivary gland neoplasms and their occurrence in children
4. Learn about the common swellings of the lower lip and buccal mucosa
5. Develop applied differential diagnosis
About Our Presenter:
Dolphine Oda is a Professor of Oral Pathology in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.  Dr. Oda is on the medical staff of the University of Washington Medical Center and Harborview Medical Center.  Although Dr. Oda's main commitment is to patient care through the biopsy service in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, teaching is her passion.  To date, she has been honored with 26 teaching awards including a highly prestigious University of Washington Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Oda has 69 papers published in refereed journals and publishes a popular monthly column called Case of the Month.  Dr. Oda is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, and she holds a Washington dental license.  She is also a member of the American Dental Association, Washington State Dental Association, Seattle King County Dental Society, American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, the International Association of Oral Pathologists and the United States/Canadian Academy of Pathology.

Session 2
Presenter: Dr. Lakshni Boyapati
Course Outline: This lecture will begin by analyzing the esthetic zone and factors to consider when evaluating a smile. It will also define mucogingival defects and discuss their etiology. Classification of defects and the corresponding treatment options and success rates will be detailed before clinically based case presentations. These cases will be used to illustrate the range of periodontal plastic surgical techniques that can be used to provide optimal esthetic outcomes. The surgical techniques that I will show will predominantly fall into 4 categories: Connective tissue grafts; Free gingival grafts; Tunnelling techniques; and Pedicle grafts

Objectives:
1)Define Mucogingival Defect
2)Be able to discuss elements of an "ideal smile"
3)Be able to classify and mucogingival defect
4)State the amount of root coverage that can be expected based on type of MG defect
5)Discuss surgical techniques that may be used in different clinical cases
About the Presenter:
Dr. Lakshmi S. Boyapati received her B.D.S. degree from the University of Sydney in 2002.  She received her certificate and Masters Degree at the University of Michigan in 2006 and also became board certified in 2006, by the American Board of Periodontology.  She attended the University of Bern, in Switzerland, for an Implant Fellowship in 2007.  She was an instructor at both the University of Michigan and the University of Illinois. She is affiliated in the University of Washington, Department of Periodontics. Dr. Boyapati has also written several publications and book chapters.
