The Secret Life of A Building
An Artistic Exploration and Dinner @ The MAAS Building Garden October 15th 7pm - 10pm $30 (limited to 30 seats) BYOB
Please save the date for a multi-course dinner prepared by artist and chef Helena Keeffe inspired by the MAAS building and its surrounds. Taking cues from survey maps, historical photographs, and word of mouth, Keeffe will offer gustatory tales of the building's past lives as brewery, coppersmith, and soap and candle works, amongst others. Her menu will bring local produce to the table in service of sharing local histories.
The MAAS Building, built in 1859, was once home to a brewery and trolley repair shop and is currently an event space and cultural hub for Philadelphia's community of musicians, dancers and theatrical artists.
Helena Keeffe is a nomadic artist, teacher and cook who brings these identities together in projects that invite others to step with her into unfamiliar territory. After 12 years in the San Francisco Bay Area - where she led cooking, ceramics and textile workshops culminating in a temporary restaurant designed and run by 8-10 year olds; as well as working alongside chefs Russel Moore at Camino and Jerome Waag at Chez Panisse - Keeffe has spent the past six months traveling and building a diverse culinary vocabulary. She recently cooked a dinner at SOMA in Mexico City based on the history of cochineal - a red dye made from a parasitic insect whose value to the Spanish Crown as an export from Mexico was second only to silver.
Testimony from past dinners:
"It was an amazingly creative -- and delicious -- culinary experience!" - Kathryn Reasoner, Napa CA
"Fantastic dinner, one of the best in my life!" - Lewis deSoto, Napa CA
