Poetry of Resilience
POETRY OF RESILIENCE directed by Katja Esson (75 min, 2011, USA)
Poetry of Resilience is a documentary by Academy Award-nominated director Katja Esson about six international poets (Li-Young Lee, Lillian Boraks-Nemetz, Majid Naficy, Alexandre Kimenyi, Yashuhiko Shigemoto, Choman Hardi) who individually survived Hiroshima, the Holocaust, China's Cultural Revolution, the Kurdish Genocide in Iraq, the Rwandan Genocide, and the Iranian Revolution.
These six artists present us with a close-up perspective of the "wide shot" of political violence. Each story is powerful, but the film's strength comes from its collective voice: different political conflicts, cultures, genders, ages, races - one shared human narrative.
Preceding the Poetry of Resilience, these 3 short films will be screened:
LADY RAZORBACKS directed by Laura Green (4 min, 2011, USA)
When a group of Pacific Islander women decide to start a rugby team in East Palo Alto, California, all they have in mind is getting in shape. But this group of women - who range from teenagers struggling with school, to church-going college students and mothers of six - find the field an unexpected sanctuary. Fijians, Tongans, and Samoans discover common ground learning the sport they grew up watching their brothers, uncles and cousins play. In a space where hitting hard and caring for each other are synonymous, they learn new ways to express themselves, support one another, and challenge the stigma attached to their community.
BLANK CANVAS directed by Sarah Berkovich (3 min, 2011, USA)
When Kim Thelen received a devastating diagnosis for uterine cancer, her world turned upside down. Through her treatment, she has struggled to cope with her changing body image in positive ways. Taking an unconventional route, Kim decides to turn her baldness into a blank canvass for self-expression, and in doing so creates a powerful statement that allows her to share her experience with others.
THE BARBER OF BIRMINGHAM: THE FOOT SOLDIER OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT directed by Robin Fryday and Gail Dolgin (26 min, 2011, USA)
This Oscar-nominated short film features 85-year-old Mr. Armstrong, an African American barber in Birmingham, Alabama, as he experiences the manifestation of an unimaginable dream: the election of the first African American president. This colorful and courageous activist of the Civil Rights era casts his vote, celebrates Obama's victory and proudly unfurls the American flag as he is inducted into the Foot Soldiers Hall of Fame.
More films to be announced later.
