Stairway of the Stars Concert THURSDAY, MARCH 22nd, 2012
For over 62 years, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District has produced an annual musical extravaganza to share the outstanding music education programs in the district with the community that provides much of the support. The district's excellent music programs are featured in a two-night concert called "Stairway of the Stars" at the Civic Auditorium in Santa Monica. The Thursday night program consists of an Elementary Honor Band, Orchestra and Choir as well as Middle and High School Orchestras, Bands and Jazz Band.
ALL ELEMENTARY HONOR GROUPS, MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL BANDS, AND JAZZ BAND WILL PERFORM THURSDAY AND FRIDAY EVENINGS.
MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL CHOIRS WILL PERFORM ON FRIDAY NIGHT ONLY.
MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRAS WILL PERFORM ON THURSDAY NIGHT ONLY.
Overall, there are approximately 1,000 student performers involved in the event. The 2012 concert will actually be the 63nd Annual Stairway-of-the-Stars concert!
This year, the concert will take place on March 22nd and 23rd, from 7:00 p.m. to about 9:00 p.m. Each year, a guest conductor is featured to work with the district's students and this year, with the band as the focus, Tom Cole, retired Director of Bands at Rancho Bernardo High School, will serve as the 2012 Stairway Guest Conductor.
The 2012 Stairway Honor Award Recipient will be Chandra Narain. Chandra Narain has served the Santa Monica-Malibu USD for almost 23 years. She currently works in Education Services as an administrative assistant specializing in the Visual and Performing Arts Department. Everyone who has had the pleasure of knowing Chandra will agree that she is one of the hardest working, kindest, most generous souls they have ever met! Chandra serves hundreds, if not thousands, of people each year with a personal touch that somehow makes everyone feel as if his or her needs are a top priority.

Question: |
Chandra, Yes I can read, and yes I understand but I thought I would ask anyway. My elderly parents would like to see their grandson Mark Stevenson perform in his last Stairway. We have gone through the ticket craze every year trying to get enough for the family (since fourth grade) is it at all possible to purchase 5 stairway tix in advance for Friday night? |
Answer: |
Each family is limited to four online advance ticket purchases. If you need more tickets, you can purchase during box office hours, starting at 5:30p the day of the event you wish to attend. I would recommend that you arrive no later than 45-60 minutes prior to box office opening, in order to be sure you can get the tickets you need. |
|
Question: |
We were told the advanced tickets for families of the performers would go through the 14th but have now realized they have sold out...?? If we are a parent of a performer, is there a chance we bring our performer and not be able to purchase a ticket for the performance once we arrive? Do the shows ever completely sell out? |
Answer: |
Yes, unfortunately, online advance ticket sales have ended for Thursday as of this morning. The tickets are available first come, first served, until they are sold out or until the 14th, whichever comes first. Stairway is a huge community event that sells out every year--900 students play and about 1150 parents, family, friends, and city officials attend. But fret not! We didn't turn one person away last year... We will have some limited tickets available each event night, starting at 5:30p when the box office opens. To make sure you get what you need, come EARLY and stand on line until the box office opens. The line starts forming around 4:30p. BTW, there are still tickets available on Friday, if your student is playing that night. See you there! |
