Event
John Zorn performing to the films of Harry Smith
ANTHOLOGY BENEFIT CONCERT! JOHN ZORN LIVE Anthology's Composer-In-Residence John Zorn first encountered Harry Smith while in his late teens and the experience forever altered his DNA. Zorn has said that he learned "alchemical synthesis" from Smith, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the startling and spectacular soundtracks that he has created over the years to accompany Smith's films. For this special film and music event, Zorn, who will perform on saxophone, has assembled a dream ensemble of musicians including Bill Laswell, Cyro Baptista, Ches Smith, and Chuck Bettis to interpret his dynamic electronic and percussion scores. While Zorn's music for FILM NO. 16 has become a classic, tonight he will be performing for the first time with a specially selected assortment of new preservations and more obscure titles that are sure to expand eyes and ears alike. The show includes Smith's only 3D work (FILM NO. 6) and what might be his most rarely-screened piece, FILM NO. 19, an extended series of fragments from his incomplete big-budget WIZARD OF OZ animation.
Tickets to this special benefit concert will be $20 general, $17 for Anthology members. Members can reserve tickets by phone: (212) 505-5181 x20, or email : ava [ at ] anthologyfilmarchives [ dot ] org
