Artifacts of Consequence- In a crumbling, burnt-out America, an underwater bunker stores the relics of our everyday lives: Barbie, Moby Dick, Twinkies and bond traders are all preserved in a labyrinthine warehouse, shelved in boxes, awaiting the stabilization of the continent above. The hilarious and dystopian play was called "deliriously imaginative" "pulp fiction" and "theater of ideas" by the New York Times, and charts the sexual awakening of a young woman in isolation while the facility nears collapse. It's a timely play about preserving our American cultural legacy - particularly now, with the country in recession, and... dare we say it, decline?
Ashlin Halfnight- (Playwright) Ashlin Halfnight's plays include Balaton (Nominated for Best Play of 2009, NYITA), GoodPictures (Outstanding New Play 2008 Talkin' Broadway), God' s Waiting Room (Best Play, 2005 NYFringe), Diving Normal (Plays and Playwrights 2007), and Artifacts of Consequence. He is a Fulbright Award winner, and is the recipient of a TCG Grant, a Ludwig Volgelstein Artist Grant, and the Howard Stein Playwriting Fellowship. He was an artist in residence at the National Theater of Hungary in 2005/2006, was member of The Royal Court' s New York Residency, is a member of MCC' s Playwrights' Coalition, and is Resident Playwright at the Railroad Playhouse. Ashlin received a BA from Harvard and an MFA in playwriting from Columbia. His plays have been performed in Canada, The US, and Europe, and his film Northbound, starring Gordon Pinsent, will shoot in May 2011. Ashlin is currently the Artistic Director of the award-winning New York theater company, Electric Pear Productions.
"A finesse that is rare for a new writer." The New York Times 4/17/07
Kris Thor- (Director) MFA, Columbia University under the guidance of Anne Bogart and Brian Kulick. He is a graduate of Dartmouth College as a Senior Fellow, focusing on the dramatization of cultural histories. This was realized in two productions, one studio production at the Moscow Art Theatre called Vasilia the Beautiful, and an investigation of the Icelandic Sagas at Dartmouth College titled Egil's Saga: Depictions of a Viking Poet. More recently he formed the Lift Group where he directed St. Fatso's Lament by Hillary Miller, which performed at the Cherry Lane Studio and then moved to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He has also directed Chekov's The Seagull, Hillary Miller's The Hovering and most recently LEARegardless and The Blind with the Vortex Theater Company. The Blind was also extended with Classic Stage Company, where Kristjan was the Assistant Director for CSC's Hamlet, starring Michael Cumpsty. Kristjan was also named one of NY Magazine's "Top 25 Under 25" for 2006.
"Artifacts of Consequence will introduce Newburgh to the third of our inaugural group of Playwright's in Residence and represents a critical step in the pursuit of our core artistic mission of new play development as it will mean that we have presented each of the 3 plays that will make up our first full season, beginning next fall. One reason I chose this play from Ashlin's canno of works (despite the fact that it has been produced once before) is because it is a wonderful opportunity to completely transform all aspects of the Playhouse giving the audience a 360 degree experience, which is also a core vision and critical development step for this play." Seth Soloway, Artistic Director, Railroad Playhouse
