Arts Gumbo 2015 - Plains Cultures
Arts Gumbo culminates on Saturday, November 14. At 6p, native visual artists will be on site demonstrating their traditional techniques of relief carving and beading, and displaying mixed media paintings. Chef Bear Alexander will teach participants how to cook fry bread; the bread will then be used to make Indian Tacos for all.
At 7pm, Lady Belknap will be performing a hip hop set, in which she talks about Native American topics and issues in her music. She's a Plains Native American from the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation in Montana. The tribes she represents are Nakota, Whiteclay, Sioux and Nez Perce. After that, the Spearfish Drum & Powwow Dancers will treat audiences to a performance including powwow dancer regalia styles: Men's & Women's Traditional, Women's Fancy Shawl, Men's Fancy Feather, Men's Chicken, Men's Grass, Women's Jingle. The performance will be followed by a Q & A and a participatory dance workshop. Randy Vendiola will be the MC for the evening.
