2012-wRECk Night, Session I
Looking for just a taste of roller derby?
The SDD invites you to join wRECk Night, a fun, low-pressure, low-impact workout for women ages 18 and older who enjoy roller skating but don't have the time to commit to competitive roller derby and league management. WRECk Night is a place where retired skaters can get their derby fix; where injured skaters can ease back into on-skates workouts and where beginner skaters can develop roller derby skills and prepare for SDD tryouts if they choose.
wRECk Night is 8-10 p.m. Tuesdays at the Garden City Gym, 160 Priscilla Thomas Way. There will be three sessions offered in 2012:
* Session I - March 6 - May 22 * Session II - May 29 - Sept. 11 * Session III - Sept. 18 - Nov. 13
Participants must be female and at least 18 years old. They must use a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads and a mouth guard. (Rental skates and some loaner gear is available for free use.) Use of tailbone or hip protective shorts is optional. The cost is $50 per session. Participants must have primary insurance or pay $45 annually for USARS insurance. USARS covers only catastrophic injury at practices.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What if I haven't skated in a long time? Or never? The wRECk Night is a place to get a fun workout, receive training and just enjoy roller skating. If the participants choose to do some scrimmaging, it will play by the lower impact Junior Roller Derby Association rules. However, skating is still a moderately difficult sport so it is important that you be somewhat fit before putting on roller skates for the first time.
How do practices work? Each practice will be run by an SDD trainer or coach and consist of skating fundamentals, WFTDA minimum skills, light cardio, lessons on positional blocking and light hitting, drills and games. Participants can bow out of any drill or take breaks whenever they want.
Will the wRECk Night participants bout publicly? No. But if there is enough interest, the SDD may set up private scrimmages among wRECk Night participants or with other cities' recreational leagues. In order to scrimmage, skaters will have to have passed the WFTDA Minimum Skills Requirements to demonstrate they can play safely.
Will wRECk Night give me the skills needed to try out for the SDD? Yes! The WFTDA Minimum Skills Test and a test on WFTDA rules will be offered at the end of each session for those interested in trying out for the SDD competitive league.
Can I or my friends and family just come and watch? Sorry, no spectators and no children please. Everyone who shows up to wRECk Night should be ready to skate!
Do I receive the same benefits as SDD membership? WRECk night participants are non-voting members of the SDD. Like some other nonvoting members, they will not have derby names registered with the International Master Roster and will not receive uniforms. However, the wRECk Night is a place to train up for SDD membership if that's what you're aiming for. WRECk Night participants may purchase SDD jerseys at the same discounted rate that SDD members pay.
How do I join? Participants may register on brownpapertickets.com by the first day of each session. New participants must sign a waiver saying they understand the risks of roller skating, and complete a new member form providing their name, address, phone number and email address.
Can I continue re-enrolling in wRECk night? Yes! Each sessions will continue sharing exercise, skating and roller derby basic skills in a fun, low-pressure environment.
What do I bring? * Proof of age * Proof of primary insurance (or copy of USARS application) * Water bottle * Comfortable workout clothes * Thick socks
