Lower Merion Academy Bicentennial Gala
The Lower Merion Historical Society, in conjunction with the Lower Merion School District and the Academy Trustees is hosting a Bicentennial Gala on Saturday, April 28th to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Lower Merion Academy, an 1812 Quaker schoolhouse that was the first public educational institution built in the region. The Quakers educated children regardless of race, class, gender, or religious affiliation. The Academy continues to be a respected symbol our Lower Merion's rich heritage, and is a safe haven, open to anyone who requests its use for peaceful purposes.
The proceeds from the event, however, will all go towards our capital campaign to finish the Cynwyd Train Station, an original 1890 station that will serve as the main trailhead to the Cynwyd Heritage Trail. We still need funds to complete the brickwork, finish up the first floor interior, and install a sustainable stormwater system. We mean for the train station to become a stormwater management demonstration site and a classroom to serve as a case study on how to accomplish a green renovation of a historic structure on a small budget. The Society will hold its annual meeting at the Academy in the afternoon, and proceed to the Woman's Club of Bala Cynwyd in the evening for presentations on the history of the Academy, current Historical Society programs, awards, a silent auction, and refreshments.
