When God Winked (SF)
The Marsh Berkley, a breeding ground for new performance, is proud to present its first play in its new Berkeley theater: WHEN GOD WINKED, the latest play by Pulitzer Prize nominee Ron Jones. Enlightenment strikes Ron Jones at the most unexpected time and place - a rec center for the handicapped. His tenure at a place he calls heaven brings him face to face with the biggest surprise of his life. Longtime Marsh collaborator David Ford will direct.
WHEN GOD WINKED is the story of how author Ron Jones came to work at The San Francisco Recreation Center for the Handicapped, now known as the Janet Pomeroy Center. Working with a real cast of characters that includes the Pope of the Sunset, the Vanishing Man, and the Woman That Talks to God, Ron spent years trying to change them, only to find himself changed by his tenure in a place he calls heaven; with all its struggles and miracles. With poignancy and grace, WHEN GOD WINKED delivers an insider's look at the rise and fall of the microcosm that is The Center; and a commentary on the current state of services for the disabled and the disenfranchised.
