Smyrna Opera House presents the JazzChords of Calloway
From http://ccsavocal.org/styled-9/index.html :
"The JazzChords of Calloway was established in 1997 when Bob McGrath (Bob from Sesame Street) appeared at the Grand Opera House and invited students from the Cab Calloway School of the Arts in Wilmington, Delaware to provide a jazz choir to sing back-up vocals onstage. Since then, the JazzChords have performed throughout Delaware, at the Hard Rock Cafe in NYC, the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Rays Starlight Cafe in Disney World (Orlando), the Convention Center in Philadelphia, onboard the Norwegian Dawn cruise ship and as the opening act at a tribute to Justin Beiber in NYC. We have sung for states' Governors, US Senators and Congressmen, and at the Rehoboth Jazz Festival and the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival which is the largest outdoor jazz festival on the East Coast. The choir won 'Gold' at the Roxbury NJ Choir Invitational. In February, 2010, the JazzChords competed at the 2nd Annual Disney Jazz Celebration in Orlando, Florida and in addition to their excellent rating, their student accompanist and one of the singers were recognized as the best at the festival. In fact, all the judges were impressed at how many singers in the choir improvised solos so well. The choir sings swing, fusion, pop, Latin-American and ballad styles of pieces written by some of America's greatest composers. Sample repertoire from previous years includes Autumn Leaves, The Beatles' In My Life, Paul Simon's Feelin' Groovy, Antonio Carlos Jobim's How Insensitive, Duke Ellington's Satin Doll, More Than Words, Frank Sinatra's Come Fly with Me, Journey's Don't Stop Believin' Clifford Brown's Sandu, The Pentatonix's a cappella version of Somebody That I Used To Know and Michael Jackson's Thriller. We also can perform a full program of seasonal pieces in December. The choir features great singing, soloing and improvisation that everyone will enjoy. The choir consists of many of the best singers in the high school. Within the choir, the best-of-the-best -- about 12 singers -- are chosen to perform at our many out-of-school engagements along with our rhythm section of great student instrumentalists. "
This program is supported, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts. The Division promotes Delaware arts events on www.DelawareScene.com.
