Hawaiian Cultural Seminar - Kaulana Mahina presented by Kalei Nu'uhiwa of Hawaii
Kalei Nuʻuhiwa will be presenting an introduction to Kaulana Mahina and the affiliated practices conducted by Hawaiians of the past, revitalized into activities of today.
Kaulana Mahina is a traditional Hawaiian time keeping system based on the natural rhythm of the moon, sun, and stars. Daily practices such as farming, fishing, harvesting, healing, politics, and religion were all timed by the celestial cycles to ensure an effective outcome.
Kalei Nu'uhiwa collaborates with several educational, resource management, and research institutions since graduating with an M.A. in Hawaiian Language from the University of Hawai'i - Manoa. The lunar information gathered in her M.A. thesis research is the source for curriculum she develops with the Edith Kanaka'ole Foundation and Kamehameha Schools Keauhou-Kahalu'u Education Group.
Under the guidance of Dr. Pua Kanahele, Ms. Nuʻuhiwa focuses her current research in Papahulilani, the traditional Hawaiian field of atmospheric studies. Papahulilani encompasses the lunar, stellar, solar, climatic, seasonal and time keeping fields of knowledge.
Additionally, Ms. Nu'uhiwa publishes a monthly lunar newsletter for over 1,000 subscribers throughout the world. Her passion is to elevate the Hawaiian consciousness by reconnecting everyone to their own ancestral knowledge, utilizing the modern tools of today, grounded in a solid foundation.
