SlingShot - Fixing the World, One Invention at a TIme
This compelling documentary profiles Segway inventor Dean Kamen and his quest to deliver safe water to the world's population by developing SlingShot, a vapor compression device that produces clean water. The goal is simple, to obliterate half of human illness on the planet through this water purification system. Because many third world countries do not have access to safe water, the pathogens in the water supply can cause widespread illness. Nearly 800 million people lack access to clean water and 37 percent of the world's population do not have access to basic sanitation facilities something that should be a human right.
The SlingShot device can take any form of potentially contaminated liquid and distill it into something safe to drink by evaporating the water and then condensing the steam, leaving pathogens behind. As a result, Kamen's system can turn poisoned well water and river sludge into safe drinking water. Kamen, who is also known for inventing a variety useful of medical devices, utilizes a non-linear approach to his creative process. SlingShot is both an inspirational character study and a look at Kamen's vapor compression distiller from its earliest development through recent trials in rural Ghana and beyond.
