"rigorously crafted, unusually satisfying" -S.F. Bay Guardian
Thursday, March 30 Friday, March 31 8 PM at Velocity Dance Center, 161 12th Avenue, Seattle
FEATURING
RELUCTANT LIGHT (2012) a dance about surrender music by contemporary cellist Helen Money & a set by Zakary Zide
AND
PLAINSONG (2011) with music by Erin Gee & set of by Katrina Rodabaugh
Tickets: $15
In RELUCTANT LIGHT, Mohr creates a series of vivid images of surrender by having dancers interact with empty rectangular forms representing sites of sickness, sleep, birth, death, confinement, protection, and ecstasy. Dancers will inhabit, stack, nest, smash, drag and balance the boxes to create a series of archetypal confrontations with mortality and intimacy. The dancers' interaction with the boxes will reveal their relationships with each other and their relationship to uncertainty.
The program will also feature PLAINSONG, the first solo performance by Mohr since she was a member of the Trisha Brown Dance Company. Inspired by the figure of Penelope in The Odyssey, this poetic dance combines classical and contemporary tropes of weaving, waiting and female inner life. Plainsong premiered at the 2011 San Francisco International Arts Festival to critical acclaim.
Since its inception in 2007, Hope Mohr Dance (HMD) has quickly gained recognition as one of the leading new modern dance companies in the Bay Area, known for its collaborations with a wide range of prominent artists, and its risk-taking, rigorously crafted, and emotionally resonant performances. Mohr's work features dancing imbued with emotional intensity, raw physicality alongside formal lines in space, explorations of intimacy, poetic original text, and driving, evocative music.
