In Mama Juggs, solo actress Anita Shontel Woodley takes the audience on a provocative and eye-opening cultural experience from the Oakland projects living room of 100 year old matriarch Suga Babe.
In the play, the women in the family (Grandma Suga Babe, Mable-Ree, and Anita) discuss the challenges women endure, including last stage breast cancer at 47, adolescent bra stuffing at 17, and breast-feeding at 27. Through the women's breast stories, the audience is treated to a rare glimpse into how they curb cultural taboos through humor; and how the family uses pointed songs to persevere social and economic adversity.
The up-close-and-personal journey seamlessly brings to life, "three generations of women as they speak frankly about body image and breasts at different stages in life." - WNYC Culture
Mama Juggs is a powerful and intimate experience that highlights breast cancer disparities in America. "About 1 in 8 U.S. women (just under 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. And overall, African-American women are more likely to die from the disease." - Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
Through courageous comedy, unapologetic candor, audience interaction, and a capella choral-gospel style spirituals; Mama Juggs is intended to show the significance of shedding stereotypes about breast issues and body image.
Mama Juggs is personal. The aspiration in writing and performing this show was to increase straight talk about breast cancer, a winnable public health issue. Anita promised her mother, who died of breast cancer before 50, that she'd share her straight talk journey about living with breast cancer publicly. As a result this performance piece has both a public health and social conscious significance.

The show premiered in North Carolina in June of 2009. In August 2010, Mama Juggs was the only American play invited to perform at the University of Yaounde in Cameroon, Africa. In the time between, Mama Juggs has been touring with great success to theaters, community organizations, women's groups and festivals throughout the U.S.
