Evening @ the Barn: Universal City 100th Anniversary Celebration!
Hollywood Heritage kicks off the 2015-2016 season of Evening @ the Barn programs with a very special event honoring Universal City on its 100th birthday year!
Founder Carl Laemmle officially opened the Second Universal City on March 15, 1915, on the 230-acre Taylor Ranch property. At the launch event, a crowd of men and women dressed in the attire of the era, eagerly awaited the display of film stages, daredevil stunt pilots and silent film idols, as well as movie cameras Laemmle had brought along. "See how slapstick comedies are made. See your favorite screen stars do their work. See how we make the people laugh or cry or sit on the edge of their chairs the world over!" stated a poster touting Universal's opening.
In honor of that momentous occasion we will have unique items on display, including costumes, props, posters and other rare memorabilia courtesy of our friends at NBCUniversal Archives & Collections. Jeff Pirtle, Director of Archives & Collections and his team of experts will be on hand to discuss the stellar preservation work they perform at the studio all year round. A visual presentation will feature a 1915 tour of the studio, a 1922 parade of stars and much, much more!
Plus, after several months of renovations, we will be hosting a cocktail party on our newly constructed back deck, which will be home to a new interpretive display about the making of silent movies. Inside, new lighting, fresh paint and carpeting are all part of the extensive work we have been performing since the beginning of the year. So we invite you to be among the first to experience the new and improved Lasky-DeMille Barn! As always our famous raffle will add to the fun! This event will likely sell-out quickly, so advance tickets are highly recommended.
