Produced by the Berryman Chamber Opera, STRANGE IS THE HEART takes us on an journey through the life, language, and imagery of one of Minnesota's most provocative poets. Set in a landscape drawn from Berryman's Pulitzer Prize winning collection of poems 'The Dream Songs', as well as biography and interviews with those who knew him, STRANGE IS THE HEART follows John and his young wife Kate though the troubled waters of love and the creative mind: coming to terms with his father's suicide when John was just a young boy, crippling alcoholism, and the relationship that both inspired and sustained them. Creating a landscape that is part dream, part hallucination, Berryman once said of the Dream Songs "they are not meant to be understood. . . they are only meant to terrify & comfort." STRANGE IS THE HEART was created in this same spirit.
The performance will be preceded by the short film biography 'Rediscovering John Berryman' by Minnesota filmmaker Al Milgrom.
STRANGE IS THE HEART: Scenes from the Life of John Berryman has received generous support from the Jerome Fund for New Music, and the Minnesota State Arts Board.
