Trauma-Informed Care
Learning Objectives: Participants will be able to Connect the use of trauma-informed practices to reach the goal of ensuring that all individuals involved in the nations system of care achieve SAFETY, PERMANENCY AND WELL-BEING. Define the Essential Elements of a Trauma-Informed System of Care. Understand the term "traumatic stress" and know what types of experiences can cause individuals to experience it. Recognize their role in responding to traumatic stress in individuals they encounter. Understand the relationship between an individual's lifetime trauma history and their behaviors and responses. Identify the impact of trauma on development (including their brain!). Understand how cultural factors influence how individuals may identify, interpret, and respond to traumatic events. Practice strategies to enhance psychological safety. Use the trauma screening to identify possible trauma-related needs and make appropriate referrals for in-depth assessments and treatment. Identify coping responses, strengths, and protective factors that promote resilience. Encourage family well-being and resilience by providing education and support to families, parents and foster parents. Identify ways in which they are impacted by secondary traumatic stress and identify coping strategies. Understand the importance of partnering with individuals, youth and families to achieve sustainable positive outcomes. Identify strategies for partnering with other agencies and systems to create an entire network that is trauma informed.
