Cap-a-Pie present: 'The Town Meeting'
Your town is teetering on the brink. Imminent destruction looms. Homes, livelihoods and an entire way of life are at stake. There's only one thing for it: a town meeting. But we need help your help! Time is running out to have your say On the eve of a crucial hearing, Little Rikjord residents gather in the community centre. Assisted only by shambolic Junior Planning Officer Benjamin Rennold, Little Rikjord's representatives must choose what is best for the future of their town. Voted the most picturesque town in Greater Doggerland for four years running, Little Rikjord's economic prosperity owes much to the neighboring iron ore mine. However, the current seam has been exhausted and the Little Rikjord Iron Ore Mining Company is seeking permission to move Little Rikjord and begin mining directly under the town. Cap-a-Pie, in collaboration with Dr. Paul Cowie, Newcastle University, present a new piece of theatre that places you at the centre of the problem and demands solutions. This play explores how communities react to external pressures and seek to represent themselves. Rather than research participants, the audience will be co-investigators. Dr. Paul Cowie will be making a written record of the performance but no personal information will be taken nor will anyone or their views be identifiable in the published research. There will be an opportunity to be credited as co-researchers. The project is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England as well as funding from Newcastle University's Engagement Team, Newcastle University's Institute for Social Renewal and through collaboration with Newcastle University's Institute for Creative Arts Practice.
