Country Sax, City Sax - HELLO, SAXOPHONE! Concert Series Debut Season, Concert 2
Come out on December 4 at 7:30pm to the Unitarian Church in Charleston, for the HELLO, SAXOPHONE! KAMMERMUSIK Concert Series' second event, 'Country Sax, City Sax'! Have your ears delighted and your curiosity excited as the sax-centric chamber music concert series continues to expand the boundaries of the Lowcountry's classical and popular offerings! Following a successful first run that was described by attendees, including the Charleston Symphony's Yuriy Bekker, as "brilliantly programmed," "well executed" and "fun," the series' creator, saxophonist Jonathan Kammer, is at it again! Going heavy on the paprika, he's cooking up an evening of Eastern European and American gems that will make for both a deliciously entertaining show and a tastefully modern classical concert. Kammer follows his muse, and is making a bold recipe for the evening's musical meal! The show will highlight the influence of traditional folk music on the classical music of Bela Bartók, Zoltan Kodaly, György Ligeti, Jenos Takács, and Aaron Copland. These famed composers absorbed the folk music of their compatriots in the countryside, and used it as source material for their art. Entertainments include a romanian dance medley, a rollicking sax quartet, a mysterious and exhilarating sax and piano duet that draws from folk harmony, and many new arrangements! Joining Kammer this go-around is a cast of first-rate local musicians: co-producer Laura Ball on piano and vocals, Mark Sterbank, Jack Petit, and Kindall Smith covering saxes, and James Cannon laying down mixed meter syncopations on drums and hand percussion. Kammer and friends will bring the show home to America with Copland's version of the Shaker folk tune Simple Gifts, and Ball will lead the company down South with an Appalachian bluegrass tune! The concert series will continue Feb. 18, and April 21 with more exciting and unique small ensemble music featuring sophisticated saxophonist Jonathan Kammer and friends' dynamic and evocative performances.
HELLO, SAXOPHONE! Concert Series is a collaboration between saxophonist Jonathan Kammer, of KAMMERMUSIK Productions, and Laura Ball, of UNED!TED Interdisciplinary Artist Concert Series.
