Beta Dada
Cabaret Voltaire. Under this name a group of young artists and writers has been formed whose aim is to create a centre for artistic entertainment. The idea of the cabaret will be that guest artists will come and give musical performances and readings at the daily meetings. The young artists of Zurich, whatever their orientation, are invited to come along with suggestions and contributions of all kinds. -Zurich, February 2, 1916 --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Founded on February 5th, 1916 by Hugo Ball and Emmy Hennings, Cabaret Voltaire was the beginning of Dada in Zurich, Switzerland. Its founders' intention was to foster an environment where art and politics fused and the resulting events at the cabaret proved to be the first steps in the development of the anarchic art movement known as Dada.
Dada was an informal international movement, with participants in Europe and North America. At the outset of World War I, the movement served as a form of protest against the bourgeois nationalist and colonialist interests which many Dadaists believed were the root cause of the war. Additionally, the cultural, intellectual, and social conformity that emerged during the war was a primary target for participants' rebellion.
Fueled by the current social prevalence of racism, sexism, homophobia and other forms of oppression in mainstream culture, BETA DADA aims to comment on these global issues in a critical manner. Join us for a night of performance, poetry and more. Anything, everything and nothing will collide!
