Female Freaks: Sex, Science & Sideshow, An Illustrated Lecture with Ilise Carter
Date: Tuesday November 10th Time: 8pm Admission: $8 Location: Morbid Anatomy Museum, 424 Third Avenue, 11215
The display of the female body has always been a source of both fascination and controversy, and nowhere is this more apparent than in the exhibition of radically different bodies. In Female Freaks: Sex, Science & Sideshow, performer and historian, Ilise "The Lady Aye" Carter examines what is to be a natural-born or self-made freak in a female body. Using famous and infamous examples from Sara Baartman, the "Hottentot Venus" in the eighteenth century to Betty Broadbent, the tattooed lady, in the twentieth; we'll examine how, where and why the commercial showing of women's bodies becomes a vessel for every era's fears, fascinations and fetishes.
As an award-winning writer, Ilise S. Carter's work has appeared in the New York Times, the AV Club, Playboy, Bust and other outlets. As the Lady Aye, she is one of fewer than three dozen living female sword swallowers, who's worked with everyone from Cirque de Soleil to Rob Zombie and been called one of "the masters of modern sideshow," by Sideshow World.
Tickets are non-refundable unless the event is canceled.
