Five Fridays: Gabriel Cabezas, Cello
Astral Artist Gabriel Cabezas will open Five Fridays' concert series fifth season on October 2 at 7:30 p.m. All ticket sale proceeds support efforts to combat hunger and homeless through Face to Face Germantown and the Interfaith Hospitality Network.
About Gabriel Cabezas Hailed as "an intense player who connects to the music naturally, without artifice, and [who] brings a singing line to the cello" (The Oregonian), cellist Gabriel Cabezas is a winner of Astral's 2014 National Auditions. He has been featured as soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, The Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, New World Symphony, Nashville Symphony, and the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Costa Rica, among others. Upcoming, he premieres a concerto by Gabriella Smith with the New York Youth Symphony. An avid chamber musician, Mr. Cabezas tours with "Musicians from Marlboro" and has collaborated with such artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Edgar Meyer, and Mitsuko Uchida. He is also a member of the New York sextet 'yMusic,' hailed by NPR's Fred Child as "one of the groups that has really helped to shape the future of classical music." Their virtuosic execution and unique configuration (string trio, flute, clarinet, and trumpet) has attracted the attention of high profile collaboratorsfrom Dirty Projectors to Ben Foldsand has inspired an expanding repertoire of original works by some of today's foremost composers. Gabriel Cabezas studied at the Curtis Institute of Music with Carter Brey. A committed advocate for community engagement and education programs across the country, he is involved with Midori's Partners in Performance, the Sphinx Organization, and Chicago's Citizen Musician movement. He was twice the First Place Laureate at the Sphinx Competitionin the Junior Division (2006) and in the Senior Division (2012).
About Charles Abramovic Charles Abramovic has won critical acclaim for his international performances as a soloist, chamber musician, and collaborator with leading instrumentalists and singers. He has performed a vast repertoire not only on the piano, but also the harpsichord and fortepiano. Mr. Abramovic made his solo orchestral debut at the age of fourteen with the Pittsburgh Symphony. He has also appeared as soloist with the Baltimore Symphony, Colorado Philharmonic, Florida Philharmonic, and the Nebraska Chamber Orchestra, and has given solo recitals throughout the U.S., France, and Yugoslavia. He has also appeared at major international festivals in Berlin, Salzburg, Bermuda, Dubrovnik, Aspen, and Vancouver. Mr. Abramovic has performed often with such artists as Midori, Sarah Chang, Robert McDuffie, Viktoria Mullova, Kim Kashkashian, Mimi Stillman, and Jeffrey Khaner. His recording of the solo piano works of Delius for DTR recordings has been widely praised. He has also recorded for EMI Classics with violinist Sarah Chang, and for Avie Recordings with Philadelphia Orchestra principal flutist Jeffrey Khaner. Actively involved with contemporary music, he has recorded works of Milton Babbitt, Joseph Schwantner, Gunther Schuller, and others, for the Albany Records, CRI, Bridge, and Naxos labels. Mr. Abramovic is a Professor of Keyboard Studies at Temple University's Boyer College of Music, where he has taught since 1988. He is a core member of the Dolce Suono Ensemble, and performs often with Philadelphia's Network for New Music and Orchestra 2001. In 1997, he received the Career Development Grant from the Philadelphia Musical Fund Society, and in 2003, received the Creative Achievement Award from Temple University. He is a graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, the Peabody Conservatory, and he earned a doctorate from Temple University.
