VAN NESS & MARKET: TOWERS RISING
A key goal of the 2008 Market & Octavia Plan is to "mark the intersection of Van Ness Avenue and Market Street as a visual landmark" by significantly increasing the heights on adjacent parcels. Now several proposals making their way through the approval process hold the potential to transform the Market & Van Ness intersection into a high-rise focal point of the surrounding neighborhood. Just one block from the Twitter headquarters, the neighborhood is already a hot residential address, as demonstrated by the recently-completed renovation of 100 Van Ness. The neighborhood is also close to City Hall and home to existing and proposed City-owned office buildings, which form an important office submarket.
Come hear a presentation and panel discussion with the sponsors of several of the exciting high-rise projects proposed for this vital intersection: Michael Yarne of Build Inc, Matthew Witte of Related California, and John Updike, Director of Property for the City of San Francisco.
MICHAEL YARNE Mr. Yarne manages the project development teams at Build Inc. He brings over 17 years of expertise in entitlements, project management, and public-private partnerships to his management role. Prior to joining Build Inc in 2012, Yarne served four years as Development Advisor in the San Francisco Mayor's Office, where he negotiated and secured approval of the 152-acre, $7B, 30-year Parkmerced Development Agreement. At the Martin Building Company, he managed the development of a variety of mixed-use historic rehabilitation residential projects, totaling over 300 units. He also led the development of Mint Plaza, the first privately funded conversion of a downtown street into a public plaza, financed through a novel combination of a Community Facility District and a Business Improvement District.
MATTHEW WITTE As Project Partner forRelated California, Mr. Witte currently leads the development of 1500 Mission Street, in San Francisco. Prior to joining Related in 1986, Mr. Witte was a Founding Partner of Griffin/Related Properties, the predecessor to Related California, where he led the development of The Paramount, a 486-unit, mixed-income apartment tower in San Francisco.
Mr. Witte was also Founding Partner of Marwit Investment Management, LLC, a Private Equity Fund Manager, that has invested in 35 companies over the past two decades. He has served as Chairman/CEO of IndX Software (sold to Siemens), Chairman of Paciolan (sold to Ticketmaster), and Director of sTec (Nasdaq-taken private by Western Digital) and a number of other privately held companies backed by Marwit Capital.
JOHN UPDIKE John relocated from Arizona in 2006 upon taking the position of the City's Assistant Director of Real Estate. For the past 4 years, he's been the Director of Property for San Francisco. John has closed more than 700 transactions in his career, and has overseen the tremendous recent growth of San Francisco's Real Estate Department which now provides services to over 60 public buildings (4,000,000 square feet) and guides transactions for the City across a multi-county portfolio. His most rewarding project to date in San Francisco is the completion of a new 60 year master lease for the SF Wholesale Produce Market, protecting that asset to serve our food industry for generations to come.
