Sprawl to Action
Citizens of Seattle: take a minute for your city! Tonight we marshall together short films that capture moments of change in Seattle from contemporary times and past eras. From today: the suddenly booming weed industry, rapidly transforming neighborhoods, and lyrical musings about technology in our lives. From yester-year: cultural memories long-forgotten, ideas for a future that's now past, and a grassroots movement that physically shaped the city. Sprawl to Action includes the launch of Citizen Minutes, a new community video project of Northwest Film Forum.
Followed by opening night party with DJ Erin Res Sponsored by [;Naked City Brewery];
Film Program:

Legendary Alex Berry - 12 min Queer artist discusses the ways in which the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle is changing over time.
Representing the Present Dani Glovin - 5 min A series of images that capture the tension between "spontaneous impulses of experience and the mechanical laws of the instruments" used to capture those experiences.

Seattle Freeway Revolt Minda Martin - 7 min In the 60s and 70s, many Seattle citizens formed a movement to oppose the construction and expansion of freeways that would have destroyed the heart of Seattle: this film captures the integral, if little known, facet of the city's heritage.

What is so great about Seattle? Action: Better City - 1968 - 17 min A volunteer effort initiated in Seattle in 1967, Action: Better City convened "a band of some fifty architects and planners" in a study of their city. The expansive project included the production of this film.
