Diaspora Arts Connection proudly presents "IMPULSIVE!," a contemporary Persian dance show and concert, featuring Tara Kamangar (piano), Yahya Alkhansa (percussions), and Sahar Dehghan (choreography & dance). Come join us for the musical and visual magic of these world class artists.
Tara Kamangar Described as a "huge talent" (London's Evening Standard) and a "world-class pianist who excels at blending the best of Western and Middle Eastern compositions" (Gulf News), pianist Tara Kamangar has premiered works in venues including London's Cadogan Hall and the Palace of Whitehall, Sweden's Södra Teatern and Gothenburg Concert Hall, New York City's Skirball Auditorium, San Francisco's Masonic Auditorium, Oakland's Paramount Theatre, and LA's Disney Hall. Her Delos release "East of Melancholy," currently featured on Virgin America flights, debuted in the top twenty of the U.S. classical iTunes chart and was reviewed as "an alluring compilation...rendered with passionate, soulful conviction" (New York Times), and "an exquisite album" (NPR). An avid composer with a background in ethnomusicology, Tara has collaborated with musicians across several genres, from Spanish classical guitarist Angel Romero to R&B producer James Poyser. Her Reverie for Violin will be premiered by violinist Virgil Boutellis-Taft in Carnegie Hall this fall. Tara is an alumna of Harvard (Anthropology) and London's Royal Academy of Music (Piano Performance).
Sahar Dehghan From Iran she moved to Paris at an early age, where she studied dance, music, drama and literature. She has toured with Shahrokh Moshkin Ghalam internationally since 2007. She performed the lead role in the Rimsky Korsakov ballet "Scheherazade" at the Guangzhou Opera in China at the opening of the Asian Olympic Games. In 2013-14, she had the lead female actress/dancer role with the French National Theatre directed by Macha Makeieff presenting in Paris at the Theatre National Chaillot and a France tour of over 40 shows . She has performed with opera singer Beatrice Uria Monzon, the Choir and the orchestra of the Opera de Marseille as a soloist dancer for the opera "Cleopatra" direction of Lawrence Foster.She has been trained by contemporary dance director Véronique Larcher as well as in drama by Ariane Mnouchkine as intern (stage) in Paris.
Yahya Alkhansa Born in 1981 in Tehran, Yahya started playing Tonbak at the age of 9. He played traditional music for 7 years before switching to drum set at the age of 16. He has toured with many Iranian underground rock musicians and joined "127" band in 2002. He has performed in world festivals, including Italy's Arezzo wave and SXSW in Austin TX. He has also collaborated with Mohsen Namjoo and other Iranian musicians on recordings and many live performances.
Yahya has a bachelor of science from Azad University of Tehran in Metallurgy. He moved to the United States to pursue his education in Music. He studied advanced drum performance in New York City's Collective School of Music and graduated in May of 2012.
