Menotti's Madrigal Fable
Modeled on the 16th-century Italian madrigal comedy genre, "The Unicorn, the Gorgon, and the Manticore" (or "The Three Sundays of a Poet") is a madrigal fable for chorus, dancers, and string quartet, with both music and libretto by Gian Carlo Menotti (1911-2007). The creatures in the title are allegories for three stages in the life of a strange poet who keeps them as pets. The work consists of a prologue and 12 madrigals which tell a continuous story, interspersed with six musical interludes. The entire piece is an allegory of social mores, transient tastes, and the fleeting nature of artistic freedom.
Also on the program are two works by Samuel Barber. Collaborators include Confluence String Quartet and Ballet Arts.
