The Baltimore Waltz
Paula Vogel's "The Baltimore Waltz," winner of the 1992 Obie award for Best Play, tells the heartfelt and imaginative story of a fierce and loving sibling connection based on personal experiences from the playwright's life. The Baltimore Waltz was written by Vogel as a loveletter to her brother, Carl, who died of AIDS related pneumonia in 1989. This fever-dream of a play takes the audience from a hospital waiting room in Johns Hopkins in Baltimore to a whirlwind tour of Europe complete with hotel room trysts, secret rendezvous, and mysterious dealings with shady characters. As the madcap play unfolds it reveals a celebration of life and the love a sister has for her brother. From this intimately personal tale comes a play with wide universal appeal, exploring how to love and remember even those who are now gone.
