Laval will present a 2-hour program of traditional music from around the Celtic diaspora, including Scotland, Ireland, Brittany, Quebec, and Appalachia, accompanied by foot percussion and interspersed with with observations on the cultural significance of Celtic music along with amusing stories of life as a touring artist. Joining Laval will be two superlative Celtic musicians, guitarist David Brown, and flutist/bagpiper EJ Jones, both from Asheville.
Laval's unique approach to traditional Celtic music blends the simplicity of an ancient art form with stunning virtuosity and contemporary flair that resonates with families, youth, seniors, and devotees of ethnic, jazz, and classical music. Currently making his home in Asheville, Laval hails form the Pacific Northwest where he received his musical training at the Victoria Conservatory of Music. In 2002, Laval won the U.S. National Scottish Fiddle Championship and now concertizes throughout the U.S. and Scotland with over 100 engagements per year. He has been acclaimed as "One of North America's finest practitioners of traditional Scottish music" (San Jose Mercury News) and "The next Alasdair Fraser" (Scotland Press and Post). Jamie has performed for Her Majesty The Queen, on NBC's Today Show, numerous Highland Games, and top acoustic venues throughout the US. His critically acclaimed debut CD, Shades of Green, airs regularly on NPR radio, while Zephyr In The Confetti Factory, his duo album with Ashley Broder, won Best World Traditional Song in the 2007 Independent Music Awards Vox Populi.
