Bookmarks presents "An Evening of Whimsy: Celebrating 150 Years After Alice"
Bookmarks presents "An Evening of Whimsy: Celebrating 150 Years After Alice" will be held on Friday, November 6 at 7 pm at the Millennium Center, 101 West 5th Street in Winston-Salem. This interactive event will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the publication of "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll, featuring the international bestselling author Gregory Maguire.
"Alice in Wonderland" is one of the most popular books in the world, written by Lewis Carroll, who was a mathematician, photographer, and awe-inspiring author. His books are among the most quoted works in the English language, and his influence (as well as that of his illustrator, Sir John Tenniel) can be seen everywhere, from the world of advertising to that of atomic physics. This gala event will highlight a special collection of Carroll memorabilia, silent films of Alice, and artwork throughout the evening. Attendees will enjoy Mad Hatter inspired food by California Fresh Catering, colorful cocktails, Raffaldini wines, a costume contest, creative games, live music by Moonlighters Orchestra, and more.
To further excite guests about Alice, Bookmarks is thrilled to feature England-based international bestselling author, Gregory Maguire, on one of his few stops during the 11 days he is in the United States. Maguire is the author of "Wicked" (the basis for the Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name) and his newly released book, "After Alice", a retelling of Carroll's classic. Book sales will be on site by Bookmarks.
Bookmarks encourages attendees to dress as their favorite characters from Alice or to wear formal attire. The O.Henry Hotel is sponsoring the Costume Contest, which will be judged by Maguire. The winner will receive an O.Henry Hotel Greensboro Classic Package (valued at $341).
Salem Smiles Orthodontics is serving as a sponsor of three outstanding photo opportunities: Kendall Doub and Dennis Wells, award-winning artists from Art for Art's Sake, will create original artwork inspired by Alice, and students from the UNC School of the Arts will make a replica tea party set for an interactive photobooth. Additional support is provided by the Winston-Salem Journal, the Millennium Center, Goodwill Industries, and the Lewis Carroll Society. In kind donors include Cabot Cheese, Cheerwine, D's Cakes in a Cup, Dewey's Bakery, Raffaldini Vineyards, and Twin City Hive.
Tickets required: $55/per person or $100 for two people. Each ticket includes a copy of Maguire's new book, After Alice, and all activities as described above.
Join Gregory Maguire for "Tea in the Garden" at the home of Winston-Salem's own bestselling author Charlie Lovett. This fundraiser for Bookmarks will begin at 4:00 PM and will be extremely limited. Tickets will include the exclusive chance for conversation with Maguire in an intimate setting of tea in Lovett's garden and a tour of Lovett's rare book collection, including a first edition of "Alice in Wonderland" among many other Lewis Carroll collectibles. You will receive a copy of the 150th anniversary edition of "Alice in Wonderland" for which Lovett has written the introduction (signed by Lovett), as well as a signed copy of of Maguire's book "After Alice." Buying this $250 ticket, you will also have entry to the 7:00 PM event. $150 of the ticket price is tax deductible.
