SATANIC PANIC Book Launch at PhilaMOCA
On Sunday, October 4, PhilaMOCA and Spectacular Optical will invoke the presence of the Dark Lord himself when they present SATANIC PANIC!, a multimedia seance intent on conjuring the spirits of a previous era's moral panic. Philadelphia-based writer and "Satanic Panic" contributor Samm Deighan will be on-hand to act as tour guide through a visual history of a time when Old Scratch himself nearly stole the hearts of unsuspecting children...
The 1980s were strange times to be a teenager, not in the least because your very soul was at stake when it came to the music you listened to, the movies you watched, and the clothes you wore. Beginning with the release of the fabricated autobiography "Michelle Remembers" in 1980, the decade became the battleground for a culture war between Christian moralists and young rebels trying to assert their identities. Proving ample material for pop culture analysts, the moral hysteria that resulted forms the basis of Spectacular Optical's recently released "Satanic Panic: Pop Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s." The book recounts in harrowing detail the escalating insanity of Christian paranoia, covering a diverse range of subjects like true crime, court cases, role playing games, heavy metal, and horror films.
Copies of "Satanic Panic: Pop Cultural Paranoia in the 1980s" will be available for purchase at the event. http://www.spectacularoptical.ca
