Empty Spaces | Revisited
Dance Up Close/East Bay presents Empty Spaces | Revisited, an evening of original dance by Rogelio Lopez at Shawl-Anderson Dance Center in Berkeley. Empty Spaces | Revisited is the second extended rendition of the work with new choreographic explorations, new scenes and new dancers. If you missed round one in March, wanted to see the work in a different room or you're up for another dark and soulful journey, please join us.
Empty Spaces | Revisited is an exploration of memories that lay dormant inside of us the faint, painful, lovely, scary, lonely and sacred reminiscences discarded in darkness. Empty Spaces is an act of resurfacing these memories and bringing them into the mists of light. Join us for this tender, eerie, vulnerable experience full of luscious dancing, haunting gestures and shadowy intimacy.
Empty Spaces is set inside Shawl-Anderson Dance Center, a former residence transformed into a space for dance in 1967. With its home-like quality, Shawl-Anderson provides the perfect space for this eerie and intimate evening of dance. Audiences will wander into the space and roam throughout the pre-show installation. When the show begins, audiences will be seated in each of the four studios at Shawl-Anderson in groups of no more than 15. The cast of twelve dancers will move from room to room as they perform various sections of the piece, resulting in four slightly different shows happening simultaneously. This highly intimate and charged experience will be framed by Lopez's original lighting and costume designs.
