THE REAL MIYAGI is a superb documentary directed by Kevin Derek that details the life of Fumio Demura, the greatest karate master of all time. It gloriously captures the sensei's greatest moments, from his humble beginnings as public performer in an amusement park, to international stardom. Derek's doc clearly conveys the idea that both his life and philosophy are great examples of courage and determination. While he identifies the man through his incredible travels to his native land, his famous friends and prolific career, he also deals with themes dear to Demura's heart, including family, friendship and loss. Finally, how can one ignore his influence on the creation of one of the most emblematic figures of '80s: Mr. Miyagi. A significant part of the film deals with the character's conception, which was greatly inspired by his life and philosophy, and his friendship with Pat Morita, including his selection and preparation for the part. This film is for martial arts fanatics, action-film addicts and those raised watching the exploits of Daniel LaRusso.
