Outside In
On Friday, November 27, 2015 at 8 p.m. Open Space welcomes keyboard virtuoso Rachel Iwaasa who will share a program celebrating the piano music of queer composers featuring selections by Canadian composers and 20th Century experimental works at Victoria Conservatory's Wood Hall. Members of the LGBTQ communities have always contributed to contemporary and experimental music making, however LGBTQ composers haven't always been visible within the sphere of classical and new music. This concert will share music by queer composers from the 20th and 21st century.
On the program will be a selection from Ann Southam's Glass Houses, Jeffrey Ryan's Fornax Chemica, and Emily Doolittle's Minute Etudes. The program will also include the rarely heard The Banshee by Henry Cowell, one of the earliest examples of a composition to be performed directly on the strings of the piano. Rounding out the program will be works by John Cage and Vancouver's Rodney Sharman.
Program Sponsors: British Columbia Arts Council, British Columbia Community Gaming Grants, The Bedford Regency Hotel, SOCAN Foundation, Canada Council For the Arts, CFUV, City of Victoria, CRD, Victoria Foundation, Tom Lee Music, GT Hiring Solutions
