"Music begins where the possibilities of language end." Jean Sibelius, Finnish composer and violinist
A 150th birthday tribute in New Orleans to the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius will feature the only person with blanket permission from the composer's estate to arrange his works for cello and piano.
Internationally known cellist Jussi Makkonen and, pianist Nasig Azazian, will perform his most famous work, Finlandia, with Symphony Chorus of New Orleans.
Makkonen's arrangements are inventive and unique. He and Azazian also put the music in context, telling short tales of Sibelius's life and what inspired his music.
The concert will be September 27 at the Orpheum, empty since Hurricane Katrina flooded it in 2005. With a full renovation and passionate preservation completed, this preeminent venue will host the opening of the Fall season for Symphony Chorus of New Orleans.
