Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen
DCINY will host the New York Premiere of a new film celebrating the life and work of Morten Lauridsen, introduced by composer Eric Whitacre. The film will be followed by a Q&A with Mr. Lauridsen and filmmaker Michael Stillwater.
Winner, Best Documentary, DC Independent Film Fest
Shining Night: A Portrait of Composer Morten Lauridsen celebrates the life and music of the artist named an 'American Choral Master' by the National Endowment for the Arts, whom musicologist Nick Strimple describes as "the only American composer in history who can be called a mystic". Exploring the relationship of art, nature, and spirituality, Shining Night reveals the composer through the lens of his love for the natural world together with his passion for music and literature, interwoven with commentaries from composers, conductors, and singers.
Filmed in 2010 and 2011 in California, Washington, and Scotland, the documentary conveys the richness and breadth of the award-winning composer's life, with a soundtrack featuring his masterworks- Lux Aeterna, O Magnum Mysterium, Nocturnes (Sa Nuit D'Ete, Soneto de la Noche, and Sure On This Shining Night), Dirait-On and Madrigali. The first biopic made of this iconic composer, its release commemorates the 15th anniversary of the premiere of his masterwork Lux Aeterna and the 25th anniversary of the premiere of Madrigali.
